AFM 2018: Veronica Ngo Actioner, FURIE, Sells To Well Go USA

FURIE

Western audiences have gotten an ample taste over the years of what multi-faceted actress Veronica Ngo can do, most prolifically on camera. She kicked ass on her way into the fandom next to Johnny Tri Nguyen in films such as The Rebel and Clash before paving her way into Hollywood for a time in David Ayer’s Bright and Rian Johnson’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and now she’s doing it again in Le Van Kiet’s latest, Furie, which began its campaign back in Cannes long before finally premiering an official trailer for its Vietnamese release in February.

Alas, on the eve of the American Film Market with pre-sales underway, Well Go USA has officially acquired the rights to the upcoming action thriller with a release now being planned for early next year. The film joins Well Go USA’s continuous raft of content partly derived from Asian-driven movies, a few of which already include the 2019 release of Zhang Yimou’s Shadow, and possibly, Jesse V. Johnson’s ensemble action thriller, Triple Threat.

Ahead of the upcoming American Film Market, leading sales company Arclight Films has sold the female-led Vietnamese language action thriller Furie to Well Go USA Entertainment, it was announced today by Arclight Films’ Chairman, Gary Hamilton. Well Go USA will unleash Furie in North America in the first quarter of 2019.

Arclight is also handling the international rights to the feature film during the AFM.

“The appetite for more cross-cultural and strong female empowerment stories is accelerating at a rapid pace. Now more than ever, it’s important for us at Arclight to bring hidden gems that would not ordinarily be accessible such as Furie to audiences around the world,” commented Hamilton, Chairman of Arclight Films. “We are thrilled to partner with Well Go USA to showcase Vietnamese filmmaking at its finest. Well Go’s expertise in distributing content for the global audience makes them the perfect partner to put this Asian, female-led thriller on the cinematic map.”

“We at Well Go could not be more excited to be part of the movie industry’s cultural shift to more intersectional filmmaking and bringing audiences thrilling, action-packed stories from new perspectives,” said Doris Pfardrescher, President and CEO of Well Go USA, Inc. “FURIE is as much a story about female empowerment and a mother’s determination as it is about fierce and gritty crime-fighting action. Audiences are going to love this film.”

Furie follows Hai Phuong (Ngo), a gangster who retired from the life of crime after the birth of her daughter. Despite lying low in the countryside, she can’t seem to escape her violent past when her daughter is kidnapped right before her eyes. Hai Phuong is forced back into the life she swore she would leave behind and will stop at nothing to get her daughter back from the infamous organ-trafficking ring.

The highly anticipated action film stars renowned Vietnamese actress Veronica Van Ngo who was most recently seen in Disney’s blockbuster Star Wars: The Last Jedi as Tico’s sister, Paige, and Netflix’s original feature film Bright starring Will Smith and Joel Edgerton. The film is directed by Le Van Kiet (The Rich Woman, The Last Tour: Vietnam) alongside respected action director Kefi Abrikh (Jason Bourne, Lucy).
