February is going to be a gamechanger for a lot of fans of ethnically diverse shows and films, specifically on Netflix. The streamer’s adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender has proven to be much more dynamic and authentic under the stewardship of creator Albert Kim, in succession from the show’s heyday as an iconic Nickelodeon property. And that’s just based on some of the promotional footage and images that have rolled out in the last few months for the show.
Granted, of course there are some who are less keen with a preference to more adherent wuxia content, which is cool. Avatar: The Last Airbender has a strong fanbase and I think the show is on track to only add to its posterity. Netflix has done itself justice with the successes of Matt Owens and Steven Maeda’s treatment of One Piece and director Sho Tsukikawa’s explosive take on Yu Yu Hakusho, so it’s safe to say that Avatar: The Last Airbender has plenty of momentum to ride on as long as the vehicle itself is up to par.
