BEVERLY HILLS COP Enlists Reboot Deal With Paramount And Netflix

It looks like Paramount’s Beverly Hills Cop franchise will finally get the reboot succession some fans have been waiting for with the latest confirmation from Deadline‘s Mike Fleming Jr.

The studio is at the table with Netflix for a one-time deal with a sequel option also in play to revive actor Eddie Murphy’s iconic portrayal of sly, fast talking detective Axel Folely to audiences.

Martin Brest’s inaugural 1984 feature launched a trilogy centered on the character whose hilarious crime-solving exploits saw the character frequent Beverly Hills all the way from his original station in the city of Detroit whenever he needed to solve a tangible case.

Directors Tony Scott and John Landis directed the 1987 and 1994 films, respectively, with the latter failing to meet expectations. In 2013 CBS attempted a TV incarnation with actor Brandon T. Jackson which never got off the ground, but still put a potential fourth film in arms’ reach for Paramount. Film duo Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah (Gangsta, Black) were previously attached to direct the follow-up in 2016 but have since gone on to helm the latest threequel, Bad Boys For Life, which opens in January for Sony Pictures.

It is said that Netflix will work with Murphy, along with returning producer Jerry Bruckheimer to crew up and develop the reboot, including sifting through writers and directors.

Murphy’s recent return to cinema has been reaping praise for his portrayal of Rudy Ray Moore in My Name Is Dolemite and is currently on deck to reprise his role with a cast of new and additional faces for Craig Brewer’s Coming 2 America in 2020.
