BIRDS OF PREY Casts Rosie Perez As Renee Montoya
Umberto Gonzalez revealed on Wednesday over at The Wrap that
Academy Award nominee Rosie Perez has been cast as Renee Montoya for Dead Pigs helmer Cathy Yan’s forthcoming DCEU entry, Birds Of Prey. The role of Montoya has been extensively auditioned for among the cadre of characters to join the Harley Quinn-led superhero team-up with previous contenders including Justina Machado (One Day At A Time) and Roberta Colindrez (Vida).
A Gotham City police detective for a time and openly lesbian, Montoya was created by Bruce Timm, Paul Dini and Mitch Brian and launched in 1992 for DC Comics. In the events that followed the 2006-2007 series 52 installment, she would re-emerge as superhero alterego, The Question – a successor of the Vic Sage hero who first appeared on the pages of Blue Beetle in 1967. Along with an array of formidable fighting skills, The Question’s varying abilities also include genius-level intelligence and knowledge of possible events in the past, present, and future.
Perez whose credits also list Do The Right Thing (1989), White Men Can’t Jump (1992), Fearless (1993), Dance With The Devil (1997), and Pineapple Express (2008), joins Margot Robbie in her Suicide Squad reprisal as Harley Quinn, as well as the newly-added Jurnee Smollett-Bell and Mary Elizabeth-Winstead, respectively cast as Black Canary and Huntress. Adapted from the work of creative duo Jordan B. Gorfinkel and Chuck Dixon, the film will see our all-female line-up band together to take down seasoned Batman villain, Black Mask.
Robbie will also produce the film with a script by Christina Hodson (Bumblebee upcoming Batgirl), and with Kroll & Co Entertainment’s Sue Kroll and Bryan Unkeless also producing.
