CONSUMED: XYZ Films Goes Wild For Butcher Brothers’ Next At Cannes

XYZ Films

Film duo Mitchell Altieri and Phil Flores, better known as The Butcher Brothers have directed their newest horror thriller to date with Consumed, with Devon Sawa (“Chucky” the Syfy/USA Network series, Final Destination) headlining. The film is directed by Altieri from a script by David Calbert, with Courtney Halverson (Unfriended, “True Detective”) and Mark Fariglietti (Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, How to Get Away with Murder, “Madmen”) also starring.

Consumed follows a married couple, Jay (Famiglietti) and Beth (Halverson), as they embark on a celebratory camping trip one year after Beth’s cancer remission, but things go horribly wrong when the couple find themselves trapped between a wild madman (Sawa) and a skin stealing monster. Flores and Texas Chainsaw Massacre vet Jeffrey Allard are producing the new thriller, with XYZ Films exec producing and launching sales at the upcoming Marché du Film in Cannes with a promo for buyers.

Consumed reunites Altieri and Flores for their fifth outing together following their award-winning Lionsgate franchise, The Hamiltons (2006) and The Thompsons (2012), their 2008 remake of April Fool’s Day for Sony Pictures, and 2010 Sundance sellout thriller, The Violent Kind. As the official PR language notes: Becoming recognized for their maverick brand of horror, their filmmaking has been celebrated at top tier festivals such as, SXSW, Berlin, Sitges, Fantasia and Fantastic, and seen on the biggest screens and platforms worldwide.

“When I first read the script for Consumed, I was excited about the challenges it presented. Its characters not only have to face a terrifying creature stalking the woods, but individually, they are also forced to struggle with their inner demons brought on by true-to-life tribulations such as cancer or grieving loss. I set out to visually adapt a film that balanced these situations we may all face at one time or another, coupled with the exhilaration and sheer horror of being lost deep in the wilderness as something unknown tracks your every move,” said Altieri.

XYZ’s current projects include Cannes Director’s Fortnight title In Flames, Tribeca Official Selection The Seeding, Matt Johnson’s Berlin competition title Blackberry, Flying Lotus’s Eiza González and Aaron Paul starrer Ash, Atom Egoyan’s Seven Veils, Sundance selection Run Rabbit Run, Nacho Vigalondo’s Daniela Forever. The slate also includes Nick Cassavetes’ thriller God Is A Bullet, Lorcan Finnegan’s Nocebo, and BAFTA-nominated Boiling Point helmer Phillip Barantini’s Accused. Additionally, the company is in post-production on the Netflix Original action crime thriller, Havoc, directed by Gareth Evans and starring Tom Hardy and Forest Whitaker for its 2024 release.

Altieri, Flores and Sawa are represented by Gersh.
