DJANGO/ZORRO: Tarantino’s Django Sequel Crossover Comic Is In The Works

Jeff Sneider at Collider has it on good terms that a Django/Zorro crossover comic book adaptation is in the works. Stand-up comic and Hulu series Ramy exec producer Jerrod Carmichael (The Carmichael Show) was reportedly tapped by its author, Quentin Tarantino, to pen a screenplay based on the 2014 limited comic series he created to sequelize his 2012 hit, Django Unchained, starring Jamie Foxx.

The story takes place several years after the events of Django Unchained. Django is still a bounty hunter, and since there’s a warrant on his head back east, he has mainly been plying his trade in the western states. After safely settling his wife, Broomhilda, near Chicago, he takes to the road once again, sending her funds whenever he completes a job. It’s by sheer chance that he encounters the aged and sophisticated Diego de la Vega — the famed Zorro — and soon finds himself fascinated by this unusual character, who can also hold his own in a fight. It’s not long before Django becomes Diego’s ‘bodyguard’ and joins him on a mission to free the local indigenous people from slavery.

Interestingly, the project made a blip the same year the comic was released as news unraveled over the e-mail hacking scandal over at Sony regarding “D/Z”, per an exchange between Tarantino and Amy Pascal who served as chairwoman at Sony Motion Pictures. Pascal left her position at the studio officially last month upon relocating to Universal.

The news also marks the latest update on anything Zorro-related since news broke in 2016 over Jonás Cuarón’s continued development of a futuristic Zorro-reboot over at Lantica Media and Sobini Films with Gael García Bernal set to star.

Sneider’s report cites that it’s not clear as to what capacity Tarantino is or be involved while Carmichael pushes the needle forward. Details also remain pending on whether or not Sony is handling distribution.

Tarantino’s latest Cannes crowdpleaser, Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt, opens in theaters nationwide on July 26 from Sony Pictures.
