HOUSE OF THE DRAGON: HBO Lines Up New ‘Game Of Thrones’ Prequel For Its Streaming Service

Not gonna lie. My work schedule made it difficult to keep up with Game Of Thrones all these years and so the likelihood of avoiding passing spoilerific mentions of it will be about as imminent as my next breath.

Gladly enough the show has been immortalized as a global hit and so the fans are definitely in for more medieval fantasy action and adventure though as HBO has finalized ten-episode straight-to-series order, House Of The Dragon. The show is based on Game Of Thrones author and patriarch George R.R. Martin’s “Fire & Blood”, which sets 300 years back before the events of Game of Thrones, and is centered on the story of House Targaryen.

The news comes following news of a cancelled seperate prequel that was greenlit last June with Naomi Watts set to star. Post-production seems to be at the center of the difficulty.

As announced at WarnerMedia Day by Casey Bloys, president, HBO Programming, Game of Thrones patriarch George R.R. Martin created the new show with series writer Ryan Condal (Colony, MGM’s Hercules); Both will act as showrunner and executive producer next to Miguel Sapochnik (HBO’s True Detective, Cinemax’s Banshee) who will also direct the pilot, and with Vince Gerardis exec producing.

“The ‘Game of Thrones’ universe is so rich with stories,” says Bloys, president. “We look forward to exploring the origins of House Targaryen and the earlier days of Westeros along with Miguel, Ryan and George.”

For Emmy and DGA winner and nominated Game Of Thrones vet Sapochink who directed multiple episodes for the seires, House Of The Dragon will be his project as part of an HBO overall content development/production deal for both HBO and HBO Max, the latter which has an entire slate of projects that are now in development.
