JFF THEATER: MY LOVE STORY!! – A Heartfelt Blend of Romance, Comedy, and Unexpected Bromance
Mike Garcia
Based on the popular manga written by Kazune Kawahara and illustrated by Aruko, the live-action adaptation of My Love Story!! (俺物語!!) presents itself as a refreshing romantic comedy. However, beneath its sugary surface, the film feels like a “bromance” in disguise—a theory that, in my opinion, is firmly validated by its post-credits scene.
The story follows Takeo, a hulking high schooler with a heart of gold but zero luck with the opposite sex. While women constantly swoon over his best friend Suna—who, conversely, shows little to no interest in romance—Takeo remains the perpetual “wingman.” Resigned to his fate of being the lonely second fiddle, Takeo’s life takes a 180-degree turn when he rescues a beautiful girl from a harasser. Accustomed to losing in the game of love, he finds himself completely out of his depth when he realizes that the girl he saved is actually falling for him.
I sat down to watch this film without knowing exactly what to expect, and I was immediately captivated. There is a certain innocence to this tale of adolescent love that feels reminiscent of the more emotive works of the legendary director Yoji Yamada.
The film strikes a perfect balance between being genuinely hilarious and deeply moving. The cast delivers incredibly grounded performances—especially the lead, Ryohei Suzuki. Despite playing a character so exaggerated he risked falling into ridicule, Suzuki makes him believable, allowing the audience to dive headfirst into the story.
As a viewer, you feel the joy, the heartbreak, and even the taste of the cakes the protagonist devours as if you were part of the narrative. Achieving that level of immersion is incredibly difficult, yet My Love Story!! pulls it off effortlessly. Whether you’re here for the sweet romance or the unbreakable bond of friendship, this film is a delightful surprise.
The film is available for free wih multiple subtitles on JFF Theater until February, 3
