Let me invite you to a trip back in time not so really long ago, even though for some it would sound like prehistory, what for others it feels like yesterday, but whatever it is for you, dear reader, just accept my invitation to the year 2007, to the universe of this small Taiwanese film directed by Hsiao-Tse Cheng, that revolves around two almost love stories condemned to just turn into heartwarming memories of a cherished past.
The film revolves around Miao Miao, a Japanese exchange student, who arrives at Taipei to spend a school year in Taiwan. Once there, she befriends Ai, a joyful girl full of energy and love who becomes her bestie. At the same time, Miao Miao falls in love with Fei, an older boy, owner of a second-hand music discs shop, who carries over his shoulders the burden of a tragic love from the past. Busy on her quest of her first love, Miao Miao is unaware of the silent love that Ai is feeling towards her.
A bittersweet story of unrequited love revolving around all those things that are left unspoken and the sands of time bury in our hearts for all eternity as precious memories that can be feel but never again touched. My words could make you think the opposite, but this is a very joyful movie about honest love and tangling feelings, that tangles the characters into a journey of self discovery of pain and reconciliation, but above all, of experience, paved over a path through passages of “The litlle Prince”, and beautiful songs about love and broken hearts.
Miao Miao is a delightful experience for those who enjoys corny stories of romances and impossible love affairs. A movie full of cuteness that may achieve the difficult task of making shed a tear to the toughest guy in town, the one that would never admit having ever watched this film, but does it on private, when nobody could see his most vulnerable side.
