Red Sea Media is launching sales for its titles at the virtual Cannes market this year, and one of their newest signals the return of Sean Patrick Flanery following his latest appearances, Shaun Piccinino’s American Fighter which premiered at the 23rd Fantasia Film Festival.
Flanery can now be seen in action in the sales trailer for Mickey Kelley, directed by American Wrestler: The Wizard helmer Alex Ranarivelo, who wrote the pic alongside Flanery. Adding to this is the fact that Flanery himself is a certified Jiu-Jitsu instructor which makes him more than qualified to spearhead a touching, gritty and brutal underdog martial arts drama.
And that’s the tone the trailer gives off, really. Set in the 1990s, Flanery stars in the title role described as “one of the first American black belts in Brazilian jiu-jitsu”. As the rest of the logline and previous plot descriptions note, he “gets pulled away from everything he loves and into an unsanctioned MMA tournament”, ensuing an emotional journey that could bring him on the brink of permanent injury, and a lot more.
Mickey Kelley also stars Katrina Bowden and Dennis Quaid, along with MMA Fighters Renzo Grazie, Edson Barboza and Mickey Gall, with Maurice Compte, Reno Wilson and Currie Graham also cast. The trailer serves up a hearty few minutes worth your time, and ought to whet the appetite until acquisitions arise with release dates in the works.
