Director Simon McQuoid has had his hands full for much of the last five years with all things pertinent to the cinematic rendering of Netherealm Studios hit tourno fighting franchise, Mortal Kombat. His 2021 adaptation revamping the IP with Lewis Tan did suitably well for its release between theatrical and streaming numbers all but guaranteeing a sequel, even if others had opinions of their own about it.
Invariably, while not the best live-action adaptation of a tourno fighter, the film had its strengths, and my only guess from then on is that McQuoid and his team worked to build on those strengths plentily. The result? We won’t know until late October when reactions and reviews go viral, but the moment every MK fan chomped at the bit for on Thursday arrived with an official trailer for Mortal Kombat 2, following months of Johnny Cage-laden teasers per the persona now inherited by Karl Urban who now enters the arena. Shades, splits and all.
The trailer premiere was also pre-empted by a bevy of character posters which you can view in the gallery beneath, especially those of Joe Taslim as Bi-Han’s new alter-ego, Noob, the morbid return of Max Huang’s Kung Lao following the events of the first film, Martyn Ford as the tyrannical Emperor Shao Khan, and C.J. Bloomfield in a much more definitive presentation of Tarkatan warrior, Baraka since its abbreivated debut in 1998’s Mortal Kombat: Annihilation. The icing on the cake in large part is especially the return of Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion, here using Ed Boon’s voice for better fanservice for his classic line.
Additionally, it also feels damn good that we’re getting a trailer instead of all the AI garbage out there that YouTube is finally demonitizing. Good shit.
