Kiah Roache-Turner, the venerable mind behind Wyrmwood is back to blow your f*cking head off with the new film, Nekromancer. The film has had a rousing festival run at places like Toronto’s TIFF last year and at Calgary, and we now have an official trailer following its acquisition by Momentum Pictures for a select theatrical, digital HD and VoD release August 9.
Howard North, a down on his luck sewage worker, gets dragged into a global conflict between the Nekromancers, a family of badass demon hunters, and Finnegan (Monica Bellucci) – an evil demon who absorbs people’s souls to increase her power. When Howard finds out the truth behind Finnegan’s past and her dark plans for the future, he teams up with his new friends to discover he is the ultimate Nekromancer, the only one with the power to defeat her and save the world.
Tristan Roache-Turner co-wrote the script with a cast that includes Ben O’Toole, Monica Bellucci, Caroline Ford, Tess Haubrich, Epine Bob Savea, and David Wenham. The film’s release comes months following the proliferation of Roache-Turner’s 2014 success with indie zombie action horror, Wyrmwood, which also put forward a fall announcement last year about expanding the franchise.
Nekromancer clearly proves he’s more than worth it from a visual and stylish standpoint overall. TIFF’s Pete Kuplowsky lends his insight to the fray:
“…Nekrotronic features an indelible performance from the ever-magnetic Monica Bellucci as the queen of the underworld, and an eclectic array of demon-busting weaponry — the most novel of which 3D prints a demon’s soul into a corporeal (and therefore explodable) form. The Roache-Turner brothers have conjured up a riotous supernatural romp that splits the difference between the likes of The Matrix and Ghostbusters, then pours on the gore.”
