New Details Shared for KAMEN RIDER BLACK SUN Series

As part of the Kamen Rider 50th Anniversary celebration earlier this year, a re-imagining/reboot of the beloved Showa Era Rider, Kamen Rider Black, was announced. Written by Izumi Takahashi (Tokyo Revengers) and Directed by Kazuya Shiraishi (The Blood of Wolves, Kyoaku), Kamen Rider Black Sun is currently set to debut in Spring of 2022. At an event held by Tamashi Nations, new details and photos have been shared, as well as cast announcement for our protagonist and antagonist.

Kamen Rider Black Sun stars veteran actor Hidetoshi Nishijima as Kohtaro Minami, the man who becomes Kamen Rider Black Sun. Tomoya Nakamura plays Nokuhiko Akizuki, Kamen Rider Shadow Moon. Notably, Shadow Moon has never previously been given the title Kamen Rider.

Along with these initial cast announcements, the first images of Kamen Rider Black Sun and his Rider Machine, Battle Hopper, were shared.

Director Shiraishi said of the project:

“The thought of being in charge of this amazing reboot of Kamen Rider Black gives me the shivers. I’m going to need to rely on every bit of my skill to ensure I don’t get crushed by 50 years of Kamen Rider history. I want the tragic story of Kohtaro Minami and Nobuhiko Akizuki to carve a new niche in the chronicles of Japanese heroes. I plan on giving it my best, I hope everyone will see it!”

The Special Effects Director for Black Sun is Kiyotaka Taguchi (Ultraman series, Kamen Rider Den-O). Visual Concept Designer Shinji Higuchi (VFX Director, Shin Godzilla, Director Attack on Titan, Writer, Neon Genesis Evangelion) is also attached to the project. New details are teased for later this month.

Kamen Rider Black originally aired from 1987 into ’88, followed by a direct sequel, Kamen Rider Black RX, from ’88 to ’89. The character has made regular appearances in the series since, including a significant cameo in 2009’s Kamen Rider Decade where he was the subject of a two episode special. The show was also adapted into Masked Rider by Saban Brands, also responsible for the much better received Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers. In Black, protagonist Kotaro Minami is captured and turned into a cyborg by an evil cult. They hope to turn him in to the next “Creation King” to rule the world, but he escapes and fights them as Kamen Rider Black.

Make sure to follow the official Twitter Account for the project for more, including additional cast photos, a video message from both announced actors, and further news. Additionally, the kind folks over at Tokusatsu Network have translated a special interview with Shiraishi, Higuchi, and Taguchi about the film.
