Buy Me A Coffee

Currently making the rounds at FilMart this week is another notable etch for the action crowd in Out Of The Shadow. Sales outfit One Cool Film showcased the key art for this year’s edition in the film’s latest move since screening for the Special Focus on Hong Kong section of the 19th edition of the Osaka Asian Film Festival earlier this month. Here’s a description by way of Osaka 2024 programmer Jason Maher:

Chu Po is a sprightly teenage girl with a strong sense of justice but her mother, Tao Kuen Ying, would rather they keep a low profile in the fishing town of Tai O. However, people are in need and Po decides to take action after learning a little karate. She soon becomes an internet heroine but keeps it a secret from Tao until she gets in over her head when she comes to the aid of Pastor Hung and his handsome son, Man Chun, who find their church is the front of a drug ring. This is when Tao reveals a secret crime-fighting history of her own.

Ricky KO, director of Time (2021, OAFF2022), delivers a playful vigilante film, complete with laughs, fighting, Cantonese humour, and a touch of family drama unfold in the beautiful setting of Tai O. Despite the humour, the message has some moral messages: that one must do the right thing, help others and also know when to seek help.

…And by the way, Time was excellent. For those of you curious, it’s streaming on Netflix. As for Out Of The Shadow, a commercial release date remains to be seen in its home territory while a trailer is circulating online which you can view below.

Out Of The Shadow stars Kay Tse, Larine Tang, Ansonbean, Natalie Tong and Cheng Tan Shui.
