Following news of its worldwide sales back in November of last year, Radius/TWC has officially now acquired the North American rights to director Timo Tjahjanto‘s latest collaborative efforts with Merantau Films and XYZ Films for the new film, The Night Comes For Us. The news arrives on the eve of the forthcoming premieres of two films from both partnering production companies, Tjahjanto‘s latest co-directorial action horror thriller, Killers with director Kimo Stamboel, and filmmaker Gareth Evans‘ upcoming sequel crime saga installment, The Raid 2: Berandal.
The Night Comes For Us sees action star Joe Taslim (The Raid, Fast And Furious 6) leading the way as a gangland enforcer named Ito who returns from a stint abroad, and is forced to deal with internal war brewing in his own local crime family while plotting its own campaign of territorial expansion. The film will reunite several names from The Raid franchise, which brings Taslim back to the set once more with actor Yayan Ruhian, with further casting info to be announced soon, and Evans directing the action. The Raid 2: Berandal lead actor Iko Uwais joins Evans solely to design the fight sequences for the film, blending Mixed Martial Arts with Indonesian martial arts style, Silat, incorporated with Taslim‘s own familiar territory in the style of Judo.
The Night Comes For Us begins filming in the next few months, and is slated for a 2015 release, while Tjahjanto‘s new film, Killers, expected to release on February 1 and 8 in Japan and Indonesia, respectively. Evans will debut his new film, The Raid 2: Berandal tomorrow night at the Sundance Film Festival before releasing the film worldwide beginning in New Zealand and Australia on March 27, followed by March 28 in Indonesia and North America courtesy of Sony Pictures and Stage 6 Films, and future dates pending.

H/T: Deadline
While director Timo Tjahjanto continues to promote his latest co-directorial action/horror effort with fellow “Mo Brother” Kimo Stamboel titled Killers, things are still set in motion for Tjahjanto‘s own solo contribution as helmer of the latest collaboration between Merantau Films and XYZ Films for The Night Comes For Us. Some details have already been ironed out, including the plot, where we rising international action star Joe Taslim (The Raid, Fast And Furious 6) return to form, this time portraying a Gangland Enforcer named Ito who comes home to Jakarta after a stint abroad, and is forced to deal with internal war brewing in his own local crime family while plotting its own campaign of territorial expansion.
Just six months away from principal photography, actors Joe Taslim and Yayan Ruhian, and fight choreographer Iko Uwais are running the numbers on the action sequences for producer Gareth Evans’s latest return to the set with director Timo Tjahjanto for upcoming martial arts crime thriller The Night Comes For Us. But even so, the prospects for the folks at Indonesia’s PT Merantau Films and L.A.’s XYZ Films are looking brighter and brighter.
Writer and director Timo Tjahjanto shot off a few tweets on Monday after a completing the first day of choreography for the upcoming production of The Night Comes For Us. Following his previous collaboration with The Raid 1 and 2 helmer Gareth Evans now in the producers chair since scribing Tjahjanto’s Safe Haven segment in the summer 2013 horror anthology, V.H.S. 2, The Night Comes For Us brings lead actor Joe Taslim and co-star Yayan Ruhian back together in a reunion that is likely to be one of the most celebrated after their stellar performances in Evans’ The Raid, featuring the two in one of the film’s most brutal, solid and most pulse pounding action sequences ever put on film, a signature quality of the work coming from Indonesian production platform PT Merantau Films.
Described as a story of vengeance and redemption, the current synopsis for The Night Comes For Us sees Taslim taking the lead as “Ito”, a Gangland Enforcer whom after a stint with the notorious South East Asian Triad, returns to his local crime family in Jakarta only to find himself trapped in a world of betrayal and chaos as the Triad plans its bloody campaign for expanision. With the script currently full speed ahead in development and the film set to kick off shooting sometime this April or May, the bulk of the film’s hybridized fight action mingling MMA and Judo with Silat will be handled by Indonesia’s latest action star, Iko Uwais, who will appear once more as the lead in Evans’ The Raid 2: Berandal this Spring, with Ruhian returning as well.

Production of The Night Comes For Us also comes in light of the upcoming release of Tjahjanto latest Indonesian/Japanese horror thriller, Killers, with co-director, Macabre helmer Kimo Stamboel, who is poised to steamroll production with Ruhian in his upcoming lead role in One Good Thing with fellow actor and Chilean martial arts action sensation Marko Zaror, from a script by production company XYZ Films’ own writer and producer Todd Brown of Twitchfilm. Tjahjanto and Stamboel’s Killers is set to make way to the big screen this February.

Hours after Killers co-writer and director Timo Tjahjanto delivered the brand new sales poster for his next directorial effort, The Night Comes For Us, Twitchfilm founder and writer, and XYZ Films executive producing partner, Todd Brown brought exclusive updates for the film, regarding credits and a new synopsis.
With writer/director Gareth Huw Evans’ The Raid 2: Berandal nearing the completon of its post-production since wrapping in July, PT Merantau Films will be back at it with at least two more films, each to be directed by The Mo Brothers, Timo Tjahjanto and Kimo Stamboel. Tjahjanto took to Twitter on Sunday to unveil the new poster for his own upcoming production of The Night Comes For Us, for which Evans will produce and direct action sequences for Fast And Furious 6 co-star, actor Joe Taslim since starring in Evans’ 2011 thriller, The Raid (a.k.a. Seruban Maut), with co-star Yayan Ruhian coming off both The Raid and the forthcoming sequel.
In a forwarded article from Screen Daily, Digital Spy reports that director Gareth Evans will be on board his next film, THE NIGHT COMES FOR US after BERANDAL (a.k.a. THE RAID: REDEMPTION) wraps filming this month. The articles state that Evans, most known for push-kicking action fans into a new era of martial arts cinema with Indonesian action vehicles, MERANTAU and the recent success of THE RAID: REDEMPTION, will serve as action director for the U.K.-based production.
In the film, Joe Taslim will star as a mob enforcer who struggles to seek atonement after inadvertantly causing a massacre. The film was previously reported as being neither a martial arts film nor a horror of any kind, with the former being a little difficult to comprehend considering Indonesian action favorite Yayan Ruhian is going to be in it as well, unless Ruhian himself is looking to evolve and stand out more dramatically as an actor, which I think is a brillant idea considering the love he has earned from action fans alike. Moreover, given the recent poster that was shared to the public, I take it that this will have some type of action in it to help showcase Taslim’s evolving nature as the industry’s next international cross-over success story, post-Jackie Chan and Jet Li, next to fellow ‘Raid’ co-star and Expendables 3 hopeful, Iko Uwais.
With the successes of all film’s mentioned, Evans and Taslim have set themselves up perfectly for what is looking to be another great year ahead in martial arts and action cinema history.
THE NIGHT COMES FOR US is slated to begin filming this fall with director Timo Tjahjanto, who is also slated to release his next film, KILLERS, later this year. XYZ Films, which is co-producing the film with Evans’ company, PT Merantau, has sold distribution rights to select territories woldwide under Sony, including North American distribution rights to Sony Pictures Classics.
Joe Taslim stars as ‘Jah’ in this week’s North American release of Fast And Furious 6, directed by Justin Lin.
Best year ever? I’d say. Let’s get started. 😉
Netflix’s K-content announcement is making the rounds these days. Worth spotlighting in my book is Officer Black Belt which comes from “Bloodhounds” shepherd, writer/director Jason Kim and announced last year with actors Kim Woo-bin and Kim Sung-kyun.
Actor and action star Iko Uwais is tapped for the lead role in the tentatively titled Warpath, from director Liam O’Donnell (Beyond Skyline, Portals). The film will rejoin both star and director following their previous collaboration on 2017’s sci-fi sequel, Beyond Skyline, with Frank Grillo and Yayan Ruhian.
There’s something to be said about actress and action specialist Ayane’s debut in Reiki Tsuno’s Mad Cats.
I’m a little biased when it comes to some films. I’m especially keen on adaptations of Japanese mangas, given the fascinating source material and their cultural sway they’ve earned in the last century. Knights Of The Zodiac is just the latest to come out of the woodwork of Sony Pictures/Stage 6 Films, and comes with the exciting arrival of Japanese actor Mackenyu who nowadays can be seen reveling in the success of his most recent streaming episodic, Netflix’s “One Piece“.
Barbarian star Georgina Campbell leads the cast in Lovely, Dark, And Deep, taking centerstage of Theresa Sutherland’s feature debut for an atmospheric supernatural thriller that’s as moody as it is gutwrenching at times. There’s a thematic pattern of forgiveness that permeates our main character, but that message is shrouded in an almost chilling air appropriate for a film of this genre if you’re the type that prefers cliffhanger closure and edge-of-your-seat uncertainty.
It’s been almost a decade since actor Joel Kinnaman upscaled his career into the mainstream from the Easy Money and Johan Falk films to titles like Safe House, 2014’s Robocop and with DC’s Suicide Squad movies to name a few. He’s really excelled as an actor with a keenness for action roles, something that comes at a crucial time according to one German distributor in a recent Variety article where the time for new action stars couldn’t be more better or advantageous than now. It certainly takes someone of Kinnaman’s caliber to pull a feat like this off, as he’s proven time and again, and on December 1 he’s back to make the point loud and clear with none other than John Woo at the helm for holiday revenge thriller, Silent Night, from Lionsgate.
Spain has been an interesting location to see action titles emerge from in the last decade or so. Like most countries it’s not typically known for the kinds of productions that get talked about on platforms like this one, so when something like Kike Narcea’s latest Iberian coming-out party, I’ll Crush Y’all! makes an entrance, it’s totally reasonable if heads turn in response.
Filmmaker Jamie Childs’ recent TV credits on Disney+ series “Willow” and Netflix’s “The Sandman” should be an ample warm-up for those who’ve seen his work, and are keen on what the first-time feature director now offers with his latest debut, Jackdaw. At ninety-six minutes, the film packs in a steadily-paced and cerebral crime thriller that runs the gamut for a story set during the course of one night, trekking England’s Northern rust belt amid a heist gone awry.
The ceremony is no laughing matter when it comes to Australian psych-action thriller sci-fi, Echo 8. Heralded as a beacon of success for indie film locals in the region as a low budget sensation, the film has been tracking more than well at festivals with ample reception, and I’ve happily contributed as much through my platform.
