POINT KARATE: Analyzing The Recent Interactions Between Frank Dux And Viking Samurai

So you might not have known but Frank Dux, the real life inspiration for the 80s action classic ‘BLOODSPORT’, recently had some choice words for popular content creator, VIKING SAMURAI (VS) aka David K. In the last few days VS has addressed this (with the video link below) and I am compelled to do the same.

As a means of transparency, I do preface this by saying that I am indeed a devotee of VIKING SAMURAI’S (VS) content and concede that a future collaboration between VS and myself is in the works. And by that same token the nexus with VS, does prompt me to present some form of analysis that portrays VS in a more relevant view – given recent circumstances. Even upon the weight of evidence that is so easily accessible, it is clear enough (at least to me) to identify deficiencies in the claims made against VS – which is the purpose of this piece.

Within the framework of this analysis, the overall presentation of this critique about ethics eventuated in portraying a ‘false balance’ by essentially elevating one viewpoint in such a way that many reasonable viewers could be misled.

Undertaking a line-by-line review is undoubtedly tedious and fails to serve any practical purpose other than to perhaps satiate individual self-righteousness. Instead, it is comparatively more meritorious, to assess the basis of work that VS presents and broadly discuss these against principles such as impartiality, reasonableness, respect and professionalism.

• Firstly, at no visible or audible juncture had VS ever deliberately admonished or spoken ill of Frank Dux; in fact, his name was only raised in the context of VS’ notable guests – by such iconic Hollywood stunt and fight choreographer Steven Lambert and famed action Director Sheldon Lettich. But even then, past stories are recounted, experiences relayed and insights are presented that add nostalgic value and flavour to the discussion. There are numerous videos online that present a far less palatable view of Frank Dux, and whilst some are scathingly comedic or soberingly dark – none of these have been driven by VS himself. In fact, a recent follow up production has VS discussing the achievements of Dux within the context of martial arts.

• In addition to the actual quality content and slick production values, VS’ personal characteristics are that which have gained him tremendous traction. His topics are compelling, well researched and very measured in their delivery; evidently, his output is a reflection of the high expectations he places on himself. There is a true level of class, with his Editorial commentary presented with an educated view that has a clear structure – whilst his interviews are delivered with diplomacy. Many of you would know that VS had even purchased a copy of Dux’s autobiography as part of his research, aiming to consume all content prior to any interaction. This gesture is not only professional but completely respectful; as a journalist with over 10 years publishing experience I would engage in similar research ahead of any interview.

• Though not completely uncommon, it is a rarity to see content creators not only address a diversity of viewpoints but evaluate in such a calm and composed manner. VS is no exception to the self-auditing principle; whilst he never provokes conflict, he will address negative comments or criticisms with a fair, and open mindset. Consequently, VS isn’t constrained by any criticism as he welcomes a diversity of perspectives, giving reasonable opportunity for all to comment and then deals with these logically. Never controlled by the folly of emotions nor resorting to childish name calling, VS is the personification of absolute class and civility. Quite honestly, VS is one of the few that will adhere to the rubric of impartiality, with accuracy and self-assessment. Whilst inferior and weaker individuals will freely delete negative comments, people like VS will confront these openly. That my friends, is the truest example of courage and integrity.

• In viewing any of VS’ videos, one can immediately identify a real earnest quality to how he presents and the thoughtful research that imbues his work. Consequently, he doesn’t pursue a specific thread that ever courts controversy but rather explores topics with a respectful totality and clarity. In having communicated with VS (aka David K) for the last few months, I can say with unequivocal certainty that what you see is what you get. He’s a very articulate, intelligent and friendly individual – to use a very Australian vernacular, one could easily assert that VS deserves the moniker of a ‘top bloke’

Ultimately if one commits a cursory glance into the life and times of Frank Dux, it is fair to assert that he has enjoyed vast success based upon individual pursuits. It’s undeniable that he has participated in various opportunities that very few could even dream of, within the landscape of movies, pop culture and martial arts. So any negative observations about a person’s own character (as Dux has seen) would cause distress to said person, so the common-sense view would be to, (in general terms) refrain from making gratuitous critiques.

But in the parameters of this analysis it is not for us to gauge whether the critical lens on Dux is fair and reasonable, as any one in the public eye will be subject to as much criticism as they are praise. Couple this with the immediacy of online social interactions, and the comments would undoubtedly overwhelm the subject and cause that justifiable angst. Yet at the same time, it would be also unjust to endorse criticisms against VS when these are unsubstantiated, given the elements cited above.

And so entitling this a ‘Defense of Viking Samurai’ would be erroneous, as this would suggest he had engaged in questionable conduct when in actuality, he simply did not.

The critique that was leveraged against him ultimately appears to be simplistically binary in its delivery, with the outright suggestion that VS lacks any ethics – when really nothing could be further from the truth.
