Review: THE AWAKENING Blends ‘Predator’ Vibes with Dual-Timeline Supernatural Horror

The “hunter-turned-prey” trope has been a cinematic staple for decades, yielding wildly varying results. While genre-defining masterpieces like Predator captivated audiences and spawned entire subgenres, countless others have perished in their attempt to inject fresh blood into such a well-worn premise. The new supernatural horror-thriller The Awakening tackles this exact setup, aiming to carve out its own territory in the genre.

Co-directed by Jaime Osorio Márquez, Federico Durán, and José Luis Rugeles, the plot plunges us deep into the Colombian jungle across two parallel timelines. One follows a 16th-century expedition of Spanish conquistadors, while the other tracks a modern-day tactical military unit tasked with eliminating a notorious drug kingpin. Bound across time by an indigenous tribe, both squads ultimately become the prey of an ancient, vengeful curse.

The film wraps itself in an eerie, quiet calm before exploding into a spiral of violence. As the characters desperately try to escape, they struggle to even comprehend the precise nature of the threat looming over them. The directors expertly leverage suspense to deliver gut-wrenching moments that bridge both timelines, slowly weaving them together until they beat as one.

While the filmmaking trio displays a sharp, concise creative vision, the character development leaves something to be desired, making it difficult to fully connect with the protagonists’ profound suffering. However, the directors more than make up for this with their sheer technical competence, delivering gripping action sequences and a suffocatingly oppressive atmosphere that completely swallows the viewer into the jungle alongside its doomed characters.

Fresh off its nomination for “Best Feature Film” at the 2026 Guadalajara International Film Festival, this dual-timeline survival thriller proves that the jungle still holds plenty of terrors for fans of high-stakes action and folklore horror. The Awakening debuts on Digital on November 10, 2026, courtesy of Well Go USA, followed by an exclusive Blu-ray™ and DVD release via Amazon® on December 15, 2026.
