SARPATTA PARAMBARAI aims for a knockout on Amazon Prime Video in late July

As I’ve discussed before here at Film Combat Syndicate, the thriving South Indian film scene has become a major boon to worldwide streaming video providers like Netflix and Amazon Prime. Both juggernauts have begun to feature more and more content from this region and it has proven to be such a winning formula that both are now licensing exclusive rights to films and television shows from there that range from small independent productions to large scale action-packed blockbusters.

 

Which leads us to “Sarpatta Parambarai.” This Tamil-language actioner had its trailer debuted today on YouTube and the clip has already been viewed more than three and a half million times! Is it any wonder that Amazon wanted to lock down exclusive worldwide rights to the film in a multi-million dollar agreement with the film’s production company?

The film, set in the 1980s, tells the story of a clash between familial clans that are both heavily involved in the world of professional boxing.

It is directed by Pa. Ranjith, who previously directed the acclaimed action film “Kalaa” with Tamil acting legend “Superstar” Ranjinikanth. Which even had a robust theatrical release in the United States before also being featured as an Amazon Prime Video exclusive.

“Sarpatta Parambarai” stars Arya in the lead role. The Tamil actor, while having a career that spans over fifteen years will likely be most familiar to western audiences from his work with director Lijo Jose Pellissery, the director behind the award-winning “Jallikkattu” (again you guessed it, available to stream on Amazon Prime Video) on a film titled “Double Barrell.” The surreal action-comedy, while not a hit in it’s native country, has become a cult favorite of westerners who appreciate Indian film. Arya also may be a familiar face due to the trailer for his last film, the bizarre “Teddy” going viral on English-speaking social media sites earlier this year.

“Sarpatta Parambarai” looks to be a much more serious production than either of those two films though, with its lavish period details and beautiful cinematography. It will be arriving on the streaming giant’s site on July 22nd.
