Stuntman and filmmaker Pau Han Kho has been on the road for the past year touting his latest short documentary, Saskia: The Hong Kong Action Years. This week, and since debuting last June, the documentary made its 25th and final stop at the 23rd edition of the Festival Nits de cinema oriental de Vic where the subject of that doc, martial artist and former actress Saskia van Rijswijk, was one of several names to receive the festival’s Honorary Grand Prize.
The ceremony comes on the heels of the online debut for Kho’s new short documentary which we first signaled on our site last year with a teaser trailer. Featuring highlights of van Rijswijk in the ring and on film, the sixteen-minute retrospective proffers fans of Hong Kong cinema and sport martial arts a look back at van Rijswijk’s career as a world champion cutting her teeth in Muay Thai and Kickboxing during the 80s, to landing stints as the only Dutch talent to make a significant impact during Hong Kong’s action’s peak years.
Featured in the documentary are highlights of van Rijswijk’s performances in films like China White (1989) and Fatal Mission (1991), wherein van Rijswijk talks about what it was like doing most of her stunts feasibly and safely under various conditions, as well as some moments of on-set levity and laughs. Congratulations to van Rijswijk, and to Kho for their successes on this endeavor.
