Director Jalmari Helander and actor Jorma Tommilla have been a boon together in spotlighting prospective cinema out of Finland with titles like 2010’s Rare Exports and Samuel L. Jackson 2014 co-starrer Big Game, both featuring Tommilla’s son, Onni, whose own career has since expanded with several other directors and projects in the past decade. The trio eventually got back together and welp… they did it again, this time with the wintery survival actioner, Sisu which had its premiere in Toronto last September and at Sitges the following month. With its official local release in January, other territories may follow suit, just as Lionsgate has with its official trailer debut on Tuesday which you can view below.
During the last desperate days of WWII, a solitary prospector (Jorma Tommila) crosses paths with Nazis on a scorched-earth retreat in northern Finland. When the Nazis steal his gold, they quickly discover that they have just tangled with no ordinary miner. While there is no direct translation for the Finnish word “sisu”, this legendary ex-commando will embody what sisu means: a white-knuckled form of courage and unimaginable determination in the face of overwhelming odds. And no matter what the Nazis throw at him, the one-man death squad will go to outrageous lengths to get his gold back – even if it means killing every last Nazi in his path.

Just wait until the first minute passes. Seriously. Any doubt that Sisu is gonna be nothing short of one of 2023’s biggest and most badass thrillers will immediately subside with the trailer leaving you wanting more. Bet.
