Spaceballs 2, or, “A Non-Prequel Non-Reboot Sequel Part Two but with Reboot Elements Franchise Expansion Film” is in the works at Amazon MGM according to Deadline’s Matt Grobar. A 2027 release date has also been slated for the film with Josh Greenbaum directing.
The cast will also include Josh Gad, and as of Thursday, Mel Brooks who will reprise the role of Yogurt from the inaugural 1987 film. Additionally, Gad is penning the script next to Benji Samit, and Dan Hernandez, with Gad also producing next to Imagine Entertainment’s Brian Grazer and Jeb Brody, Brooks, and Greenbaum.
Brooks directed and top-lined Spaceballs with a cast including Bill Pullman, Daphne Zuniga, and John Candy, with a voice performance by Joan Rivers, in addition to Rick Moranis, George Wyner and Dick Van Patten for one of the most memorable sci-fi spoofs of the last several decades. Brooks’ Yogurt – one of two roles he performs in the film – is billed as a spoof of the Yoda character from the Star Wars franchise.
The film comes bolstered with plenty of iconic moments, along with performances and cameos by Michael Winslow, and voice talent Dom DeLuise, as well as Alien co-star John Hurt, and actor Tim Russ in one of his earliest roles as a Dark Helmet soldier combing the desert.
Sequel talk had particularly been stirring about for well over a decade, with the studio announcing its plans last June. Brooks went onto announce the film in a video using the original film’s iconic score and opening crawl, and wearing something appropriate and fashionable for the occasion.
