[10:04am EST: Updated with official synopsis]
Actor, martial artist, VO talent and filmmaker Johnny Yong Bosch took to Instagram on Saturday to reveal the official title of his latest feature film, Spades. The independently-produced action thriller, also starring Jason Narvy (Power Rangers franchise, Wicked Game), hails from Vox Rocket Studio who’ve also revealed the first look teaser which you can view below.
As a begrudged detective investigates a recent string of murders, he soon discovers his prime suspect is a mysterious vigilante out to bring down a ruthless up-and-coming crime syndicate.
The Death Grip star and longstanding Power Rangers stalwart directs the film in his latest return to the helm following his collaborative work with Japanese action legend and filmmaker Koichi Sakamoto on films like Extreme Heist, 2005’s Devon’s Ghost: Legend of the Bloody Boy, the 2009 wall-to-wall hardcore thriller Broken Path, and Bosch’s most recent sci-fi action pilot concept, “Ark Exitus”. Spades was originally developed and announced in 2019 as Click Boom, which had a different production framework and schedule ultimately shelved by the pandemic several years ago. Of course, there’s more to the motivation behind Bosch’s latest directorial effort:
Why did I make this film? A wise friend once said, “Johnny, why don’t you just do it yourself?” So here we are. I’ve created something original. And by original, I mean, totally influenced by all the cool movies I ever saw in my entire life but on an extremely low budget! ?
My fears? You’ve seen too many +$100 million dollar films that mine won’t measure up.
My hope? You’ll enjoy it and want more.
Bosch, who can be seen opposite Stephen Lang in next year’s Isaac Florentine-directed thriller, Hellfire, has had his name attached to a few projects which unfortunately never saw fruition. David Wald’s Love Like Bullets and Nick Gillard’s The Order come to mind. Unfortunate, sure. Still, it also gives Bosch a good deal of momentum, and the fans a significant chance, to lend a project like Spades the support it’s seeking, and judging by the teaser alone, it’s looking worth the effort he’s putting in.
Spades is currently in post-production as well, so be sure to follow Bosch’s progress through the film’s social media portal below.
