Nearly ten years since its brutal and bloody culmination, Spartacus TV shepherd Steven S. DeKnight is bringing back the blood-drenched sword-and-sandal fanfare for STARZ according to a press release on Thursday.
DeKnight, whose post-Spartacus adventures partly saw him crafting Marvel’s Daredevil for Netflix and directing Pacific Rim: Uprising, will return to serve as showrunner and executive producer on a new sequel series which will “explore uncharted territory and new journeys of the original series’ iconic characters.

In the aftermath of the defeat of Spartacus and his rebel army, the drama will depict a new tale of treachery, deceit, and blood unfolding beneath the foreboding shadow of Rome.
Late actor Andy Whitfield inaugurated the series for its fruition back in 2010 with its first season subtitled Blood And Sand prior to his passing a year later, with actor Dustin Clare taking the mantle in the role of Gannicus for Gods Of The Arena. Season three would ultimately have actor Liam McIntyre claim the role for Vengeance followed by War Of The Damned in 2013.
“It has been over a decade since ‘Spartacus’ delighted international audiences and we are thrilled to reimagine and expand this gripping, action-packed drama for our viewers today,” said Kathryn Busby, President, Original Programming, STARZ. “‘Spartacus’ has deeply invested fans who are eager for its return, and we look forward to working with Steven on this exciting next chapter.”

Lionsgate Television is producing for STARZ with EVP Original Programming, Karen Bailey and Directors, Original Programming, Giovanna Desselle, and Alex Alberts overseeing the series on behalf of the network. Head of Scripted Development and EVP, Scott Herbst and SVP, Scripted Development, Jocelyn Sabo will both oversee for Lionsgate Television.
If you’re new to the series and feel like you’ve missed out, the show is currently available on disc and streaming, including Hulu. I was able to catch up between its run on STARZ and while Netflix ran it before removing it. It’s post-300 success and goes even farther with the blood, gore and sex so if you’re squeamish, avoid.
