Streaming Sleepers: NIGHT CRUISING, Eye-Opening, Inclusive Cinema

Makoto Sasaki’s 2019 documentary, Night Cruising, is currently streaming on Amazon Prime and it’s a gem to catch if you’re into exploring at least one other dimension of content creation nary explored. The movie is an extensive profile of Hideyuki Kato, congenitally blind and intent on completing his first movie, with Sasaki chronicling the careful steps and the tedious, concentrated planning he ventures to make it happen.

Below is an excerpt from my review of the documentary following its screening via Japan Cuts that year:

Simply put, what Night Cruising does is spotlight a moviegoing demographic we nary hear from: blind people. Best and quite interesting of all is that Kato himself is also just one voice among a group of other non-sighted film directors generating chatter on blind filmmakers and the craft.
