TACFEST 2024 Brings The Heat Back To Illescas With Loads Of Action And Martial Arts Fanfare In May

Our own Mike Garcia has been busy previewing some of the stuff that’s ramping for the sophomore edition of the Toledo Action Films Festival And Expo, or TACFEST & EXPO. You can check out his select write-ups by clicking here, while the word is now out for the five-day event kicking off in the Spanish municipality at the Illescas House of Culture on May 15.

Action cinema, despite being one of the most watched genres in the world, still does not have the respect it deserves, and has always been undervalued in the most important festivals and awards ceremonies, which is why it makes a year TACFEST was born, where they wanted to pay tribute to the genre that has given us more action heroes to admire than any other.

TACFEST & EXPO 2024 hails from Castilla la Mancha Film Association, in collaboration with the Association International of Martial Artists (AIAMA), which is shepherding the festival’s martial arts expo therein; Within the five day event will be three days of screenings from filmmakers around the world, totaling 31 shortfilms and 8 narrative feature films.

I’ve had my eye on a few of the titles being listed here so I’m excited to see films like Kigurumi Blade and even Kike Narcea’s thrillride out of last year’s Fantastic Fest, I’ll Crush Y’all (a.k.a. Os Reviento) which will serve as the festival’s closer.

The shortfilms from what I’ve seen are another treat with Armin Alic’s martial arts drama, Dojo, Mad Cats helmer Reiki Tsuno’s Dark Child, Nathan Geering’s Flaming Assassin, Felix Hideyoshi Ruwwe’s Karate Sensei Bob, and the last pair of shorts from R4 Films LLC with action thriller Blackout, and kung fu epic Shadow Fist 3: The Final Chapter, to name a few.

To add, action thriller El Duro will have its TACFEST world premiere on May 17, signaling the latest from actor and filmmaker Nacho Serapio whose 2023 award-winning debut action comedy, Bullets And Katanas, is now available on Amazon Prime.

Following suit on the same day will be the Quixote Awards ceremony; I’m especially pleased to share that the aforementioned Garcia will serve as a juror under the stewardship of journalist and critic, Ronin Cine Asiático’s Iván Fernandez, who makes his TACFEST return once more as jury president following last year’s festivities.

The event’s slate also includes spaces for networking and pitching, as well as panel talks, and masterclasses covering topical discussions about the action genre, stunts, financing and more. Feel free to connect with the festival on social media as well as the official website to learn more about the festival and keep up with updates in the coming weeks.
