The last three Terminator films might have been a chore for fans and the producers and filmmakers involved in the saga.
As of several years ago, that didn’t stop franchise auteur James Cameron from trying wean away at the possibilities with Skydance’s David Ellison for a new film. Geoff Boucher covered this topic intricately in a Deadline exclusive on Thursday on the eve of a brand new trailer now online for Deadpool director Tim Miller’s new film, Terminator: Dark Fate.
There’s no official logline but the story is exactly how you’ve heard it if you’ve seen Terminator 2: Judgement Day, be it in 2D or recently in Studiocanal’s 3D format; Both films will connect to each other toplining franchise principles Linda Hamilton and Arnold Schwarzenegger, and introducing McKenzie Davis, Natalie Reyes, Gabriel Luna and Diego Ramirez, and actor Edward Furlong finally returning to the role of human resistance leader, John Connor…
…Yep. You read that correctly, and one can only imagine the look on this internet’s face when the studio lets out a first look image of the actor back in character (if that’s what the plan is).
Cameron even goes on to discuss the possibilities of a new trilogy that he and Ellison have cooked up in case Dark Fate does well at the box office. That was a bit surprising to learn since I was under the notion that this was particular film going to be the actual final chapter of the saga, BUT, I’m especially interested with the trajectory with talk of a new trilogy now stirring about.
Even Robert Patrick jumped back into the fray to weigh in with answers when the subject was brought up in an interview with Syfy Wire this week. He was much more skeptic about his return to the franchise and I’m inclined to take him on his word, although you can’t help but factor in the surprise element that’s characteristic of Hollywood hype.
So, if Dark Fate does well, I wouldn’t be surprised if Patrick somehow DID return to the role. And if done right with the applied technological advancements in film and requisite stunt professionalism in the mix, Dark Fate could very well be a fine “beginning-of-the-end” story to a potentially worthwhile trilogy – one that could bring this story to a proper close.
Guess we’ll find out on November 1 now will we?
