I don’t talk about anime enough on here, and not for lack of trying; frankly I was hoping I’d have another voice to volunteer on here for that but this writing thing isn’t for everyone, so here I am to help pitch upcoming anime, The Guy She Was Interested In Wasn’t A Guy At All. CloverWorks is steering the new anime based on Sumiko Arai’s 2022 manga novel, with Masashi Ishihama directing the show for its 2027 launch via Crunchyroll.
Fashionable and upbeat high schooler Aya loves listening to rock, but no one else seems to share her interest…until she meets a cool, stylish employee at a CD shop. Dressed in black from head to toe, he has this air of mystery about him, and his taste in music is impeccable. Aya falls hard for him—not knowing her crush is actually her female classmate Mitsuki! For her part, Mitsuki generally keeps to herself and avoids standing out at school. But given that she sits right next to Aya, Mitsuki’s all too aware of the other girl’s feelings, and she’s afraid to reveal the truth. So why does she find herself talking with Aya more and more…?
The best part for me is really what brought me to put my thumbs to work here, which is the teaser and opening intro which features “Breed” by Nirvana from their sophomore studio album released in 1991. My sister, may she stay blessed in the hereafter, was a little older than me and basically drilled Nirvana into my brain starting with “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” a total 90s anthem that still holds the line to this day as one of the freshest sounds ever composed and performed.
“Breed” even resurfaces in the opening action sequence for Michael Davis’s 2007 bullet banger, Shoot ‘Em Up starring Clive Owen and Monica Bellucci. The movie undeservedly bombed that year, and I have my own feelings on that which will undoubtedly be another post for another time, but I’ll be damned if I didn’t jump in on this occasion for anime fans.
The Guy She Was Interested In Wasn’t A Guy At All debuted earlier this month with details you can read more about at Crunchyroll News.
