THE HIT LIST: March 23, 2020

Brendon Huor and Jimmy Chhiu in SACRIFICE 2 (Vlad Rimburg)

The weekend may have seen the first of a major downturn of things in the wake of the Coronavirus’s spread. But, fear not. While in isolation, you are more than welcome to enjoy our action-packed column, The Hit List, to help bide your time, and there’s plenty of action to go around.

Alas, first is our usual playlist rounding up stunt demo and performance reels from some of today’s best and rising in the field: Rachel Gelfield, Jared Jay Cox, Shannah Robin, Anthony Czumalowski, Emma Bradbury, Lukas Stoiber, Marcus Adair, Richard Buckman, Bethany Curry, Devin LaMon, Christopher Bizub, Shawn Daniels, Jahlil Wallace, Kaanchana Kerr, Masaaki Nitta and Daniel Locicero.

What you see is the recent poster unveiling for director Andrew McGee’s new cyberpunk short, Venus. The key art arrives in the wake of a Kickstarter camapiagn to help ramp up post-production with just 29 days left as of this post.

Margaret Clunie (Victoria, Last Christmas) and Phoebe French (Lala’s Ladiez) take on the dual character of Iris, once killed and rendered as a digital conciousness, who now finds her peaceful world collapsed when she’s uploaded into a new synthetic body by her insurgent mother, Nia, played by Abigail Moore.

Check out the following teaser and head over to Kickstarter for the skinny!

Next up is a slate of character posters erected in the past few weeks for Alex Chung‘s new shortfilm, Teenage Love, from Foolhouse Films, and a quartet of promo videos beginnng with the red-band trailer for Chung’s pic, followed by Danime from Mark Cheng (Ghost Source Zero), Emerging From The Shadows featuring Ron Smoorenburg and star/director Mark Stas, and the teaser premiere for the latest Team Red Pro/Rising Tiger shindig, Mulan: An East Side Story, starring Jackie Kim, which you can learn more about through its GoFundMe campaign.

The action is back as well with a fresh new playlist and Vimeo entry to cap off this post. Videos from KingLion ST, Zaror Stunts and Top Notch kick off the playlist, followed by Marcus Shakesheff’s newly released pre-viz a la The Last Executioner, Ron Smoorenburg with Rodney Glunder in a new video of their own, Stalker: Shadow Of Monolith from Mykola Galagan at Stunt MG, channel entry courtesy of David Cannan with Trevor Byrom’s Reality Trip, Steven Chan’s What Kind Of Zombies Are These?, and Kyle Murillo’s The Secret Boss with Joseph Oreste.

Following that is a twofer from Vlad Rimburg with HK cinema-tethered spirited kung fu fantasy sequel, Sacrifice 2 and seperate short, Outbreak, along with Tien Hoang’s zany riff on Hong Kong thriller, SPL, from Action C, a little something cool from YouTube channel Action-mov, and part two Jino Kang’s Timothy Mah-led action short with Kid Fury: The Phantom Witch.

Rounding out the playlist last and far from least is the return of celebrated period sword thriller, Protectress. With over twenty festival selections and eleven awards along with a feature film currently in development with America Young set to direct the project at a start date that remains forthcoming, Protectress certainly stands as something special with plenty of promise.

Protectress was a big deal in 2018 as part of the line-up for the Artemis Women In Action Film Festival that year. Actress Joanna Ke, who had plenty more to say on the project in our 2018 interview, plays a healer who finds herself locked in a duel with her mortal enemy (Charlotte Bjornbak), and forced to make an impossible choice that will forever change her destiny.
