The Movies That Moved Me: Donnie Yen’s LEGEND OF THE WOLF

Legend Of The Wolf was another blind buy for me way back when. With the surge of Donnie Yen on the scene with SPL and Dragon Tiger Gate, and eventually Flash Point, there were (and stillnare) clearly some more titles in my backlog among Yen’s resume.

I think this was a purchase from HKFlix at the time. It was definitely one of those films I couldn’t stop watching either. I hadn’t yet seen Yen’s “Fist Of Fury” TV series, but his presentation in a role with mannerisms akin to Bruce Lee far from disuaded me. Yen himself takes inspiration from the late screen legend, and for his then 1997 directorial debut, it brought Yen’s explosive, feral style of fight choreography and performance to life.

The film is set in post-World War II and follows a legendary fighter – an amnesiac whose fighting skills make him a force to be reckoned with. Upon befriending a local villager, and a bittersweet reunion with his long lost love, our hero finds himself thrust into the battlefield as he’s targeted by his former gang who now want him dead.

Some of the fighting in this film is absolutely fierce and I can only imagine what stories entail for this production. The one below should albeit present an idea as to what the rest of the film entails in terms of action and spectacle – the kind that only Yen could deliver.
