Art School Dropouts’ martial arts comedy sequel webseries, Yes, Auntie!: My Asian Auntie Season 2, is now available on Amazon Prime as of May 21. The New Jersey-based independent film banner took to YouTube on Thursday to make the announcement of the feature film edition’s acquisition by New York-based Asiancrush as of late February/early March.
The original My Asian Auntie, as it reads on their official YouTube channel, took off in 2016, and returned by popular demand as Yes, Auntie!: My Asian Auntie Season 2, with the participation of as many as five independent film banners from groups throughout the NY, Philidelphia and DC areas, including Team One Take and Kamen Ramen. The official trailer premired exclusively at the AMC Empire 25 last November as festivities went underway for the sixth-annual Urban Action Showcase & Expo in New York City.
The team, comprised of members Joey Min, Stephanie Pham, Gun H. Cho, Tin Dang and Patrick Banzali, capped off 2018 hosting a humble Indiegogo campaign of just ten dollars as a means of saying “thank you” to their fans for their support, to which fans resoundingly responded by ballooning their donations totaling over $1,360. Those earnings, stretching well into the month of January in time for the film cut’s screening at the Museum Of The Moving Image, went to poster design, new equipment, and a post-screening pizza party for held by the cast and crew.
Sadly I wasn’t able to attend the pizza party as all-nighters have next-to-no place for me at this stage in my life, although it was Samuels who personally invited me to the screening and had my ticket ready upon entry at the Museum. I almost couldn’t attend despite the event being on my birthday so it was some pretty rough terrain to organize and make happen, and it resulted in one of my best and most memorable milestones since founding Film Combat Syndicate seven years ago. Kung fu practitioner, ASDO founder and filmmaker Min, a craftsman of independent film since before the heyday of YouTube, takes on the title in gender-bending fashion as a widowed Voorhees neighbor who utilizes her secret kung fu skills to stave off gangsters. Joining Min for the role of “Niece” is actress Pham, a TaeKwonDo impressario, and multi-faceted pivotal member of Art School Dropouts who partakes in most aspects of the team’s projects, including production, management, marketing and cinematography.
Hong Kong Stuntmen Association member and Asian action genre trailblazer Robert Samuels became a recurring cohort of Art School Dropouts through his R4 Films LLC banner since debuting on their channel in 2017. He co-stars as Momma, a federal DEA agent who teams up with Auntie and Niece to track down Lester, a notorious pompadour-wearing gangster played by Leroy Nguyen of Rising Tiger Films and Team Red Productions.
Rounding out the cast are Angela Jordan, Robert Jefferson, Sharif Anael-Bey and Rebecca Hargrove.
