Your Next Viewing: TO HELL AND BACK: THE KANE HODDER STORY
There are 11 films in the Friday the 13th franchise and Kane Hodder has only played Jason Vorhees five times. Yet his name is synonymous with both the movies and the character. To most horror fans, Kane Hodder is Jason Vorhees. But do you really know the man behind the mask?
I heard Kane Hodder talk at the 2018 HorrorHound Weekend in Indianapolis and he mentioned a documentary, To Hell and Back: The Kane Hodder Story, which is about his life and career. This past weekend I was finally able to watch it (what better way to celebrate a Friday the 13th?) and I cannot stop thinking about it.
Told through a series of interviews, I got to learn about how Kane Hodder got into the industry, the accident he took years to talk about, and much more about him as a person and as an actor.
I liked the format of the interview because I got to hear Hodder’s story in his own words, but friends, family, and other horror icons (including Cassandra Peterson and Robert Englund) and others spoke, too.
Now that I know more about him, I have a deeper appreciation of what he does and where he came from. I also have a list of films that are on his resume that I have not seen. I’ve already added these to the list of films to watch with my horror movie buddies.
I can’t go into details about the information learned through this documentary without spoiling it, but if you think you know Kane Hodder, you’ve still got to see this to hear others’ impressions of him, hear him talk about working with Englund and more. Included in the film is Hodder seeing the doctor who saved his life for the first time in over thirty years. As emotional as that and the topic of his being bullied and his accident could be, this film is not overly dramatic nor is anything exaggerated.
This is a must-see for horror fans and fans of Kane Hodder. I’m definitely going to purchase a copy of this as it deserves a place on my horror shelf. My only regret is that I did not pick up a copy of this documentary when I saw him in Indianapolis so I could have had him sign it.
