ZORRO Taps ‘Elite’ Actor Miguel Bernardeau For Amazon Prime Series

The latest report from Variety‘s John Hopewell brings word that Amazon’s Prime Video platform which will now also be host to its own Zorro series starring Miguel Bernardeau (Netflix series “Elite”) in the title role, and Mexican actress Renata Notni (Netflix’s “El Dragón: Return of a Warrior”).

The ten-episode series is being billed as an up-to-date version of the classic Diego De La Vega character and his alterego, and hails from L.A.-based Secuoya Studios. It will be directed by Javier Quintas (“Money Heist”, “Sky Rojo”) and Miguel Angel Vivas, (“Locked Up”, “Unauthorized Living”) from a script by Carlos Portela (“Hierro,” “Velvet Collection”).

More from the report:

Zorro will be shaped by relationships from his youth, love and disappointment in love which will forge his development as a character and reflect a kind of masculinity far from stereotypes, Secuoya announced. His battle also takes in discovering who murdered his father, a personal mission which leads him to discover family secrets that will change for ever his destiny.

Likewise, women in the series will be “before their time, empowered, standing up to the masked hero or acting as confidants, according to their own interests,” Secuoya added.

David Martínez, David Cotarelo and Angela Agudo are exec producing for Secuoya, along with Zorro Productions’ John Gertz (The Mask of Zorro, The Legend of Zorro).

Gertz, if you may recall, was also attached to Disney Branded Television’s own development of a Zorro series starring Wilmer Valderrama. It was the latest move at the time long since efforts to reboot, reimagine or revamp the swashbuckling hero by directors like Jonás Cuarón and Quentin Tarantino; I was actually convinced that Cuarón’s own futuristic take with Z back in 2016 would eventually come to pass but…here we are.

It’s also anyone’s guess as to how the IP bounces so seemingly fast between handlers and why it’s taken so long to get something off the ground. At any rate, it looks like we’ve landed something.
