A WRITER’S ODYSSEY: CMC Ramps Up Lu Yang’s Formerly-Titled ‘Assassin In Red’ For A CNY US Release In February!

Director Lu Yang’s Assassin In Red will still have its day at the cinema. Needless to say, it’ll certainly be under a different title with A Writer’s Odyssey now in place for a Chinese New Year release with a U.S. date on February 12 from CMC Pictures.

A Writer’s Odyssey, adapted from the novel of the same name, tells the story of Kongwen Lu (DONG Zijian), the author of a fantasy novel series following a heroic teenager, also named Kongwen, on a quest to end the tyrannical rule of Lord Redmane, under the guidance of a Black Armour (GUO Jingfei). But through a strange twist of fate, the fantasy world of the novels begins to impact life in the real world, leading Guan Ning (LEI Jiayin) to accept a mission from Tu Ling (YANG Mi) to kill the author.

The film has been ramping up its campaign for more than a year now as exhibitors battled the continuing fallout with the pandemic since 2020. With a new release plan in place, CMC is out now with the official trailer following Deadline‘s exclusive on Friday.

“I am thrilled that A Writer’s Odyssey will be released to international audiences,” said Lu Yang. “A Writer’s Odyssey is a film about hope and belief, with a plot, visuals and characters that are undeniably Chinese. The film tells the story of a mortal teenager in the fantasy world of a novel, who fights against a brutal regime and eventually sets out on an epic quest. Then, what happens in the novel begins to change reality. A Writer’s Odyssey is a unique twist on the Chinese adventure fantasy film genre, and I hope international audiences will enjoy watching it as much as I enjoyed directing it.”
