No BS here. I really would need to see some footage or other at this point to be convinced that it’s absolutely gonna rock, but I could care less about an animated Mortal Kombat movie – even less so that it may only be allocated to an exclusive streaming platform as the latest report from Revenge Of The Fans so suggests.
As such, that’s what appears to be the case for the last several days in the wake of other news that Warner Bros. is launching WarnerMedia in order to rival companies like Netflix and Hulu (in a market that already states isn’t quite benefiting the studio’s Digital shingle via the DC Universe app according to We Got This Covered).
Mario-Francisco Robles (who I went to high school with 20 years ago) also reports that actors Joel McHale (Community) and Jennifer Carpenter (Dexter) are among the roster to possibly join the animated film; It would be the latest animated move for the franchise since Warner Bros. TV took a stab at an animated series with Mortal Kombat: Defenders Of The Realm in 1996 long before Warner Bros. bought Midway and renamed it Netheralm Studios.
The news is also the latest we have on anything MK-related on the live-action front since New Line Cinema’s 1995 and 1997 films led to more than twenty years of stagnation toward a third film now aimed as a reboot.
James Wan, doing excellently with Aquaman these days, is producing that very film and thusfar remains the only real legit voice on the matter as yearning fans who haven’t quit yet are left waiting with baited breath. Whether or not Simon McQuoid will still be at the helm remains to be seen, I suppose, but it’s the film a lot of fans like myself have been waiting for and hanging on ever since KTanch stirred the pot in legendary fashion with Rebirth…
And, frankly, the last thing fans like me need who’d love to see justice done in the wake of an unceremonial webseries cliffhanger (packaged with a version of Mark Dacascos whose fighting prowess as Kung Lao was dumbed-down to mediocre straw hat-throwing…twice), is another paywall.
(Ugh. Walls… good lord. What a month!)
That being said, I’m not saying WB can’t do it’s own thing with WarnerMedia, but I guess what I’m really asking as ‘where does it end?’
