Comic book creator Rob Liefeld and Cathy Christian’s Avengelyne, is back in the headlines. Deadline’s Mike Fleming Jr. reported on Thursday the live-action adaptation is now in the care of actress Margot Robbie’s LuckyChap label. Robbie will produce alongside Simon Kinberg (The 355), with Olivia Wilde eyed to direct.

Here’s a description:

Avengelyne is an angel who fights the forces of evil and often finds herself face-to-face with demons and monsters. She was the most feared warrior in Heaven’s Warhost, having single-handedly broken into Pandemonium, the outer fortress of Hell, to confront the Devil himself. She is a fallen angel, banished from Heaven by God after being tricked into questioning his love for humans. Avengelyne was stripped of all her angelic abilities, other than her great strength and her blood, which, once extracted from her body, could be used as a weapon or a miracle once empowered by quoting verses from the Bible. Avengelyne uses her powers to fight demons on earth and is being groomed to be humankind’s last hope in a coming Armageddon.

Avengelyne first broke ground in 1995 at Maximum Press and since made headway with publication appearances via Avatar Press and Awesome Entertainment, and in 2011 over at Image Comics.

News of an adaptation broke a few years later with co-creator Liefield shepherding the effort alongside Gina Carano for the then burgeoning actress to star. Several years later, Akiva Goldsman was attached to produce the pic for Paramount. Fleming Jr. reports that the role is still up for grabs while the team sets out for a “big A-list writer”.

More from Liefeld on the comic and its potency with readers:

“Avengelyne resonated so powerfully with the audience because her story of redemption is one that is so relatable. A fallen angel, sentenced to redeem herself by serving humanity, Earth is a foreign environment to her, she must adapt in order to save herself as well as mankind. Her dilemma provides humor amidst the larger plot engine driving her journey.”

LuckyChap is home to a slew of hit films including Robbie starrers Birds Of Prey and I, Tonya, and last year’s Barbie. Wilde previously directed Don’t Worry Darling and 2019’s Booksmart.
