Czech Period Action Epic, MEDIEVAL, Casts Ben Foster

It’s been well over eight years since the Michael Finch and Alex Litvak-penned Medieval stirred the spec market after being relinquished from New Regency. There was even talk about having 87Eleven’s own Chad Stahelski and David Leitch at the helm, but that was back in 2015.

This week, news from Andreas Wiseman at Deadline is confirming the film’s progress with Ben Foster (Leave No Trace, Hell Or High Water) set to star. Actor, filmmaker and Judoka Petr Jákl (Kajinek, Ghoul) will make his third outing in the director’s chair with Cassian Elwes (Mudbound) producing.

Medieval will see Foster play Jan Zizka, a 14th century Czech icon and celebrated military strategist who defeated armies of the Teutonic Order and the Holy Roman Empire. In addition to highlighting his quick thinking, tactical analysis and acumen for training unskilled peasants for combat, the film also reportedly aims to cover his relationship with a local heiress and his faceoff against a rival king.

“I loved this script and loved Petr’s first two movies,” said Elwes. “I think he‘s going to do a fantastic job on this film. And I couldn‘t be more excited to work with Ben Foster again, after my experience with him on Ain‘t Them Bodies Saints. He‘s one of the greatest young actors working right now.”

Medieval commences production this Fall in and around Prague.
