With an August 25 release in tow for director George Nolfi’s hotly-contested martial arts action drama, Birth Of The Dragon, the marketing is moving in hard and heavy in its remaining days. As such, and if you’ve been keeping up, that means targeting the exact audience the film is now aiming for in the wake of critical feedback from earlier screenings.
That means keeping things stirring as much as they can with at least two posters circulating online – one which you can view just below Tuesday’s newest trailer for the film from WWE Studios and BH Tilt which definitely goes for the base some. Whether or not it works remains to be seen, but Nolfi’s since changed his tone on the matter suggestively pushing for what he hopes martial arts fans will see as a fun kung fu flick, which is unfortunate for folks hoping for something more organic.
Set against the backdrop of 1960s San Francisco, BIRTH OF THE DRAGON is a modern take on the classic movies that Bruce Lee was known for. It takes its inspiration from the epic and still controversial showdown between an up-and-coming Bruce Lee and kung fu master Wong Jack Man – a battle that gave birth to a legend.
That the legendary Corey Yuen Kwai was the man behind the action for this one leaves room for some enthusiasm, along with mention that the film’s U.S. release has been somewhat modified to be more fitting for fans from a tonal point of view that centralizes more on Chinese/American actor and martial artist Phillip Ng’s portrayal as the late martial arts and film legend. Ng is joined by actor Yu Xia who plays Lee’s rival Wong Jack Man with little-to-no attention paid to the rest of the cast as the new trailer sticks solidly to its message. Nothing more, nothing less.
