Filipino film auteur Mikhail Red announced several projects late last year in Singapore. Dead Kids was one of them, hailing from Globe Studios and is now the subject of a new venture partnership with Netflix committing to streaming the film globally later this year.

The award-winning director behind Neo Manila, Rekorder and Block Z, as well as internationally acclaimed hits like Birdshot and Eerie directs a story based on true events: A socially awkward teen bonds with a group of misfits who plot to take out the school’s arrogant rich kid, that is until their kidnapping scheme turns deadly.

Described as a compelling story that “touches on an exciting mix of friendship, coming-of-age, thriller, and crime rolled into one, societal eye-opening movie.” Actress Sue Ramirez and actor Khalil Ramos star along with Markus Paterson, Vance Larena, alongside rising young stars Kelvin Miranda, Gabby Padilla, and Jan Silverio.

“It has always been my dream as a filmmaker to bring Filipino cinema to a global audience.” said Red. “I am so glad and honored for Dead Kids to be a Netflix Film, which is a testament to the world-class talent here in the Philippines. Netflix is the perfect platform for the film to gain international spotlight, and we wouldn’t be here without the hard work and determination of our cast, crew, and of course, Globe Studios. I hope people around the world will appreciate Dead Kids, and I hope this also helps open doors for more Filipino filmmakers.”

“In our commitment to provide a variety of content that span geographical and cultural borders, Dead Kids brings our members around the world closer to the Philippines by experiencing a story that is written, shot, and produced completely in the Philippines, showcasing local Filipino talent, and based on events that would resonate with viewers both in the Philippines and abroad,” said Raphael Phang, Manager of Content Acquisition for SEA at Netflix.

“We have been working with Netflix since they first launched in the Philippines. Since then, we’ve celebrated a number of milestones together, including making Netflix more easily accessible for Filipino viewers through pre-paid promotions, video data plans, and an integrated billing option, as well as our first content partnership when they acquired Birdshot in 2018. It is our greatest honor that they chose Globe Studios’ Dead Kids to be a Netflix Film, and I can’t wait to see what everyone says about it.”

Red’s undead zombie horror thriller, Block Z, is expected to roll out next year. In the meantime, Dead Kids revealed a first teaser back in the Spring which you can tentatively view below, courtesy of Screen Anarchy.
