Warner Bros. Pictures has gladly taken the wheel in repping North American distribution rights for writer/director Chen Sicheng’s Detective Chinatown films since 2015.
The crime-solving adventure comedy franchise has been a blockbuster hit since then, with the first installment earning more than $120.6 million internationally; The 2018 sequel scooped $544 million worldwide, and is currently ranked No. 6 on the list of highest-grossing films in China.
The franchise has since brought its latest installment to the fray with Wanda Pictures’ Detective Chinatown 3, with actors Liu Haoran and Kung Fu Killer star Wang Baoqiang reprising their roles once again for a wide day-and-date U.S./Canadian rollout starting January 24.
Presented in English and Chinese subtitles, Detective Chinatown 3 sees Liu and Wang returning to the screen in the respective roles of mismatched partners Qin Feng and Tang Ren, who journey to Tokyo to help a Japanese investigator solve the high-profile murder case of a powerful businessman. They suspect that the head of the lethal Black Dragon Gang is behind the murder, and as the case unfolds, they are soon joined by the strongest detectives in Asia from CRIMASTER World Detective Rankings, along with the elusive number one-ranked super-sleuth, Q, who raises the stakes for our heroic duo.
Releasing in Celebration of the Chinese New Year, Detective Chinatown 3 will open in more than 150 theaters and limited IMAX engagements in major cities across North America, including New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Washington, D.C., Toronto and Vancouver, in synch with the film’s release in the mainland from Wanda Pictures. Also starring are Thai martial arts superstar Tony Jaa (Furious 7, the Ong Bak Trilogy, xXx: The Return Of Xander Cage) and actors Satoshi Tsumabuki (Detective Chinatown 2, Paradise Next) and Tadanobu Asano (Thor: Ragnarok, upcoming Mortal Kombat).
Rounding out the cast are Masami Nagasawa, Shota Sometani, Honami Suzuki, Eiji Okuda, Tadanobu Asano, Tomokazu Miura and Shang Yuxian, with special appearances by Xiao Yang, Zhang Zifeng, Roy Chiu, Ning Chang, Janice Man, Zhang Yibai and Clara Lee. The film is rated R for brief violence/bloody images.
