Award-winning director An Tae-jin (The Night Owl) is on board to direct a new period action drama with the tentative working title, “Dochabi,” as announced by Netflix this week. Production has also signaled five names to lead the cast: Kim Do-hoon (Moving, Your Honor, Love Scout), Jun Jong-seo (Project Y, Ballerina, The Call), Lee Joon-gi (Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo, Flower of Evil), Lee Sang-yi (Bloodhounds, GOOD BOY), and Bae In-hyuk (Under the Queen’s Umbrella, Cheer Up).

An is directing from a script he co-wrote with Hwang Sung-gu (The King’s Warden, Anarchist from Colony), and Bang Soo-in for a story whose working title hails from the native Korean word for “dokkaebi,” the Korean goblin. The movie follows Tae-san (Kim), a former soldier who lives in hiding deep in the mountains with a Jurchen woman named Ahai (Jun), near the borderlands where farmers have formed settlements. When the commander Yi Do-gwan (Lee Joon-gi) hunts these farmers under a mask, Tae-san fights back, coming to be known as “Dochabi.”

ondaworks, the company behind The King’s Warden, is producing the film for its Netflix release.
