The show quickly became both a domestic and international hit, with several films and accompanying media

The film features the return of much of the original cast, including Megumi Ogata as protagonist Shinji Ikari, Kotono Mitsuishi as Misato Katsuragi, and Akira Ishida as Kaworu Nagisa. Chief Director Anno’s previous film, Shin Godzilla, was a Japanese market hit, and highest grossing Japanese-produced Godzilla film. Anno is also well known in the tokusatasu community, being attached to the upcoming Shin Kamen Rider film set to release in 2023, as Director and Screenwriter, and to Shin Ultraman as Writer and Producer.
