FIVE-A-DAY COUNTDOWN: Asura, Nezha, Shadow, Invisible Tattoo, and Dynasty Warriors

Continuing the countdown, we’re listing 100 movie titles at five per day going into the holidays and the coming year. Today’s five brings us to the quartermile!

Asura: As far as expenses go, stunt professional Peng Zhang’s directorial debut was an ambitious feat aimed for this past summer that should have gone off without a hitch. After being pulled from its two-day theatrical run with a commerical bomb in its wake, the film’s backers hyped a hopeful re-release thereafter for the fantasy epic starring Leo Wu and Zhang Yishang. Could those hopes be prospective this year? We’ll find out soon enough.

Nezha: Jeffrey Lau, best known for his work on the TV/film franchise circling A Chinese Odyssey, is the man shepherding this particular fantasy comedy featuring Asura star Leo Wu in the title role. Based on a Chinese deity, the film also has Michelle Yeoh, Winston Chao and Collin Chou on its roster and has seen expected releases set within the last two years to date. Considering how prolific Yeoh has been, that date could come at no better time than in 2019, so fingers crossed.

Shadow: Zhang Yimou’s stylish new period martial arts drama has been circling festivals worldwide with plenty of praise in its wake. Deng Chao, Sun Li, Zheng Kai and Wang Qianyuan lead the cast for a story set in the kingdom of Pei where a military commander’s only angle toward victory against the opposing forces is an anomalous figure that can fool anyone. U.S. date pending.

Invisible Tattoo: The most many of us have seen out of Lu Yitong’s period action thriller was a teaser and several images to boot, as well as a flier for Cannes international sales… and that’s it. That’s all, and it’s never not a continual shame in a time when folks like Vincent Zhao simply aren’t getting the timely posterity and ceremony they deserve. Dates pending.

Dynasty Warriors: Roy Chow’s adaptation of KOEI Tecmo’s hack-and-slash game series was especially the talk of the internets a short while back pertaining to its slow-to-go campaign. Production did assert that the film was still in post which ought to make it’s arrival in fitting fashion by 2019.

The list continues on Monday!
