Last week saw the first 25 titles to start the five-a-day countdown through December, and so here’s five more toward the goal of 100:
Enter The Fat Dragon: Considered one of the biggest titles for buzz during the American Film Market as sales art was emblazoned on Screen International’s front page (the same artwork people cropped and called a “new poster” ?), Kenji Tanigaki’s directorial debut may be first on the menu for Donnie Yen fans. A titular homage to a Sammo Hung classic, Donnie Yen plays a Hong Kong top-cop whose personal romantic hang-ups compel him into massive, depression-induced food consumption. From what I’ve gathered, the fat dragon will enter theaters and gobbles up crime for its Hong Kong release beginning February 9, 2019.
Ip Man 4: The journey continues into the 1960s when our titular Wing Chun grandmaster sets out to America to set things straight as once and future legend, Bruce Lee, commences his own efforts to trailblaze in the West. Joined by Scott Adkins and Chris Collins, Donnie Yen is back, and so is Danny Chan as the legend himself for a third outing since portraying a legendary likeness in Shaolin Soccer. Date pending.
Avengement: I’m actually waiting for confirmation on Seized, but Scott Adkins fans won’t be left too far hanging as he’s got several potential hits lined up, including Jesse V. Johnson’s new beat ’em up tail about a prisoner out on furlough who evades his guards and journeys back to his old haunts to seek vengeance on the people who made him a cold blooded killer. Date pending.
Abduction: This one also pairs Scott Adkins once again with his Assassination Games director Ernie Barbarash for a story about an amesiac wondering about in Ho Chi Minh City as he’s pursued by mysterious figures. I reckon one such figure may be Andy On in whatever role he plays for this upcoming thriller. Date pending.
Triple Threat: With a 2018 release date clearly out of the window as Jesse V. Johnson’s recent ensemble actioner tries to weave its way through the kinks of film industry politics, this one still bodes with promise. Jaa, Tiger, Uwais, White, Adkins, Bisping, Jeeja… its got the goods from top to bottom and frankly that first teaser was everything…and still is. Date pending.
