FIVE-A-DAY COUNTDOWN: Musashi, Red Blade, Crazy Musashi, Love’s Twisting Path, and Samurai Marathon 1855

Looks like we’re going Japanese as of Thursday as we wrap up week three of four in counting down through 100 movie titles to keep an eye on in 2019. It’s been a pace of five-a-day (hence the title, and so here are five more!

Musashi: Bushidou director Mikami Yasuo’s return to the helm will now see Hosoda Yoshihiko leading the upcoming period pic about the legendary swordsman and his fated duel with rivaling Sasaki Kojiro, to be played by Matsudaira Ken. August saw the film’s latest teaser poster which you can view below.

Red Blade: 2018 was a banner year for Sakaguchi Tak who made the rounds in Austin, Texas in time for the Iron Dragon TV Action Fest. The Re:Born star’s legendary career has seen something of a rebirth in its own right after recent troubles led to talk of retirement and as such, his return to the fray in Ishihara Takahiro’s latest fantasy samurai thriller serves to be all the more inviting. This one is Japan-bound December 15, and with its release just a day away, here is a clip to hold you over as we cross our collective fingers for a U.S. release very soon!

Crazy Musashi: Also in tow with Sakaguchi Tak’s post Re:Born career revival is this particular long-awaited one-take samurai pic that was only recently acquired from its former bearings. Crowdfunding aided further in helping bring the film back to life and so we may finally see this film get the screen treatment it deserves.

Love’s Twisting Path: Celebrated auteur Nakajima Sadao (Yakuza Gurentai, The Seburi Story) gets a Spring outing with a love story set at the latter end of Edo Period, between a tavern owner and the wayward samurai who protects her from a distance. Kora Kengo, Tabe Mikako and Kimura Ryo star. Date pending.

Samurai Marathon 1855: The collective love for actor Takeru Satoh is still very much present in lieu of his latest role as an undercover agent swept into a fracas when the government mistakes a feudal lord’s marathon race meant to prep his warriors for invasion as an act of internal aggresion and uprising. Bernard Rose directs and features a score by Phillip Glass. Opening in Japan beginning February 22.
