FRUIT NINJA Is Heading For The Big Screen

I’ve never played Fruit Ninja until this weekend. I played it for about two minutes before getting completely sucked in, and so with the new Angry Birds Movie taking hold in theaters this summer, I can see why Hollywood is keen on turning to mobile games for filmic source material. So, yes, a Fruit Ninja movie is happening at the behest of Vinson Films in partnership with the game’s developer, Halfbrick Studios for a live-action family comedy.

How To Survive A Garden Gnome Attack scribes J.P. Lavin and Chad Damiani will write a script according to THR that tells of vengeful ninjas at war with, of all things, fruit. Tripp Vinson will produce with Sam White and Tara Farney executive producing while a director is currently being sought after.

I have my own preferences when it comes to game adaptations. Then again, Fruit Ninja does leave an opportunity open for another martial arts pic down the pipeline, so I guess I’m keen. It’s a wacky a concept, ninjas fighting fruit in a feature-length format but if Vinson thinks he can make it work, so be it. Besides, Fruit Ninja has become a huge deal for the iOS industry since launching in 2010, and there’s a ton of martial arts talent worth tapping into in the world today, so clearly there’s potential to make this into something wholly entertaining for everyone.

Now, if you’ll excuse me… *quits everything, turns on Fruit Ninja*
