It’s trailer day for Neil Marshall’s upcoming comic book adaptation, Hellboy, and yes, I was despondent and in mourning when we all learned Guillermo Del Toro wouldn’t be doing a threequel with Ron Perlman. I think after all said and done, we can pretty much rest our worries here; As much as we loved the 2004 and 2008 movies, at the very least, the official trailer now online and running jam-packed with energy, action and fun suggests that Marshall smartly tapped into the one thing that ought to pull some disenfranchised disbelievers back into the fray: Tone.
Based on Mike Mignola’s graphic novels, David Harbour leads the cast for this latest go-around that also enlists Ian McShane, Daniel Dae Kim, Sasha Lane and Milla Jovovich. The footage, bookended with the lively tune of Billy Idol’s “Mony Mony”, bodes with an equally robust nature and feel that reminds the fans how much of Hellboy they may still love even as the skeletal framework of this production received a facelift, and with Harbour no less delivering the character with sheer gravitas. This movie needed to work if it was ever going to be put in front of audiences and I’m certain that Marshall and his team may have lived up to the task.
The torch crown officially gets passed as audiences will see this newest iteration in theaters on April 12.
