Hey Los Angeles! The China OnScreen Biennial At REDCAT Is Hosting A Screening Of Xu Haofeng's THE FINAL MASTER This November

Did you miss this year’s North American limited release of Xu Haofeng’s The Final Master from United Entertainment Partners? Fear not, and peer over to the official website for Roy and Edna Disney/CalArts Theater (REDCAT) for this year’s China OnScreen Biennial on November 7.

Co-presented with the China Onscreen Biennial, The Final Master – the third film by Xu Haofeng, famous as the novelist who co-wrote Wong Kar-Wai’s The Grandmaster – relocates its titular martial arts master from Southern China to 1932 colonial Tianjin. Xu’s sarcastic and elegant approach to cinema has been described as what martial arts movies would look like if directed by Straub-Huillet —or David Mamet. Echoing the film’s cultural hybridity is a rare Chantal Akerman short that captures the changing light as dusk creeps over Shanghai, its immemorial waters rippling under neon and gaudy ads, to a cover of “Nights in White Satin.”

Events for the China Onscreen Biennial will be held in multiple cities this season but Los Angeles will be the place to check out Haofeng’s latest if you fancy a good feast of martial arts on film. Besides, a theater with a terrific sound system will truly bring out out the spectacle of the fight action which comes loaded with an arsenal of many, MANY sharp weapons, all engineered in probably many ways you never imagined if you’re not too familiar. I’m not, which made my own viewing of it all the more enjoyable back in June and you can read my review here for more insight.
Past that, tickets are now on sale so go and get yours right now at this link, and do it as soon as possible. Seriously, I mean it. PRICES MAY VARY!
