Hey New York City! Japan Society’s CRUEL BEAUTY Film Series To Headline Meiko Kaji This Weekend!

Following their annoucement late last year, an official trailer has been unveiled for Japan Society’s Cruel Beauty: A Romantic Weekend with Meiko Kaji. Friday night will kick things off for the five-film event as a highlight celebration of Kaji’s eclectic career in film that begins with New Battles Without Honor and Humanity: The Boss’s Head (1975) Lady Snowblood: Love Song of Vengeance (1974), Stray Cat Rock: Sex Hunter (1970), Blind Woman’s Curse (1970) and Female Prisoner Scorpion: Beast Stable (1973).

Known for her fashionable modern style, long black tresses and piercing gaze, the inimitable Meiko Kaji rose to the top of the Japanese film industry in the late 1960s and ’70s, working with some of the era’s most talented filmmakers to create several now-classic genre film archetypes along the way—from hard-boiled girl gang bosses to kimono-clad, sword-wielding assassins. Japan Society celebrates the iconic star (who turns 70 in March) with a pre-Valentine’s Day weekend full of female rebellion, ice-cold vengeance and tough love, highlighting a selection of her most memorable roles. Guest curated by Marc Walkow.

Totally date movies, I’d reckon.
