Update as of 2.17: The Korea Times is reporting along with other sources as of Monday, confirming the death of actress Kim Sae-ron by suicide.

Earlier on 2.16: Devastating news broke on Sunday about the death of actress Kim Sae-ron, per updates at Reuters:

A friend who was going to meet Kim visited her home and discovered her and called the police, Yonhap News Agency said.

Police found no foul play, according to Yonhap.

Kim was 24 years old by then, having etched a place in Korean cinema with more than two dozen film and TV credits since debuting in 2009. Most of us have been with her since her award-winning role in the 2010 action noir, The Man From Nowhere, with her most recent TV credit being Netflix series, “Bloodhounds”.

Her career took a major dent, however, following a drunk driving incident in 2022, before putting her career on a short hiatus. From that point on, Kim was supposed to be making a comeback as of early last year as well.

Kim won a world of hearts during her screen career, and The Man From Nowhere remains one of her most poignant and compelling performances from early on. She was fantastic in Bloodhounds as well, even as producers on that series cut her role short as a result of her off-screen circumstances. I’ve yet to catch up with her filmography myself, to be honest.

Kim was amazing, and remains a firm fixture in my ongoing journey in film coverage. Her death is still being investigated, while that there are reportedly no signs of foul play speaks to the possibility that this was of her own doing makes this even more painful.

Kim, you will be missed.
