Imagine it’s the first day of a new year and the first big breaking story to kick things off happens to be another one of life’s gut punch with the news of Yuen Cheung-Yan’s passing. Sohu reported the multifaceted screen and stunt legend passed away from illness on New Year’s Day at the age of 69 and funeral plans are underway for a ceremony to be held on February 1.
A renowned character actor and choreographer, Yuen and his family blazed a trail for martial arts fandom in a career dating back to the 1960s and 70s, alongside his family and trained by his legendary father, Yuen Siu-Tien. His work in acting and action design brought vitality to film fandom, in a genre that continued to carry over beyond regional expectations with select credits ranging from films like The Miracle Brothers, The Magnificent Butcher, Once Upon A Time In China, Fist Of Legend, The Tai Chi Master and The Red Wolf, to Hollywood outings like The Matrix Reloaded, Charlie’s Angels and Daredevil.
Cheung-Yan, like his siblings, played a huge role in opening my eyes to a world beyond what the U.S. delivered. I love his films, and his death is a tremendous loss for everyone just as engaged in his work.
Our hearts go out to the friends and loved ones of the Yuen Clan. He will be missed.
